CARtoons Magazine (1960s) Pete Millar and Karl Kohler Does anyone remember reading this magazine as a kid and/or young adult? I have a couple of issues somewhere in my treasures. I need to dig them out and go back down memory lane. My high-school English teacher absolutely detested my crude drawings of Unk and the Varmits. And what did she know? ~VB
Here are a couple of links if you were also a CARtoons fan. ~VB

I wish I still had my issues of CARtoons which have been long lost since the late '60's and early '70's! (thanks for those cool links, Buzz!)
Buzz's article reminded me that I do have a neat collection of hot rod humorist Alex Toth's racing cartoons. Toth drew some great drag racing stories for not only CARtoons, but also Drag Cartoons, Hot Rod Cartoons, and a rag mag called Big Daddy Roth in the '60's. (Anyone remember these???)
Toth also had some great characters like "Carzan", "Dr. Strangegear", and (my favorite) "Granny McGo". Not only did Alex Toth draw 'toons of Dragsters, but did cool and funny stories on Hot Rods, Midget racing, Formula Cars, Dune Buggies, Jalopies, Slot Cars, and even bikini beach parties and surfing.
This collection is called TOTH 'One For The Road', edited by Manuel Auad. www.auadpublishing.com
ISBN # 0-9669381-1-9
Looks like it's still available at the above website!

A couple of posts back someone mentioned what some racers wear on their feet.
Did anyone know that Dale Earnhardt had two pair of racing shoes built espesially for him by NIKE?
He gave one pair to Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gassage which was later stolen along with one of his racing suits.I wonder what ever become of either of those two pairs? Some day they will show up on E-Bay asking for a fortune for them.

I don't know where those shoes ended up Dad, but I'm sure the right ones were made of lead!

Jerry, thanks for the insight on TOTH and his work!
I'm also happy to hear that I was not the only one spending $0.35 on the CARtoon rag every time it hit the newsstands.
Man, it is great to see Olen (your Dad) posting to the threads now. Rock on, Olen!
And finally, Jerry, where did you get your cool avatar; and, what is the history behind it? ~VB

Hey Buzz!
My new avatar is actually the cover art for a new CD my band The Late Models was going to release. I've been a drummer / lead singer for many bands around Denver over the last 30 years, and this was just another one of my projects. To make a long story short, since the album was shelved, I decided to at least use the cool cover art for something!! (I'm the guy on the right).....
....and yeah, it's cool to have Dad posting here, as it was him and Mom who started taking me out to Englewood when I was just 8 months old! (1963) Between rock n' roll and racing, it's no wonder I have trouble hearing now. (BTW---Dad's posting all the way from Alabama!)

Never picked up CARtoons Magazine, but earlier Miller and Kohler did some really fun(y) stuff for some of the "little magazines" of the fifties, R&C and Car Craft, I think. Still have most.

Jerry-- Thanks for your avatar history; I hope someday that your CD gets released and your band scores big!
Yeah, 'Bama-Dad Olen is really tearin it up now with his postings!
R n' R and Racing will take its toll on the ears. But, man, either one at a high dB-level will still make the hair on the back of my neck stand-up. I really don't like the mufflered-races; but, I understand why it has to be done. "S, D, & R n' R..." ~VB
