Mr. Sid Langsam, 1959. The man that was mostly responsible for putting the State of Colorado, U.S.A. on 'the World Wide, Automobile Racing Track'  if you will. He had the vision to construct an automobile racing facility (in Colorado) from the ground up. It would eventually become recognized world wide as a First Class, World Class, Motor Sports Complex. Continental Divide Raceways Inc. first completed a strip of asphalt that was a 4,200 foot drag strip. It was a 1/2 a mile in length, 85 foot wide strip of asphalt long enough and wide enough to accomodate the landing of a jet air plane. (In fact, Evel Knievel did just that at his only appearence at CDR in 1972. As things turned out, this, in accordence with an NHRA drag race was the last event at CDR for a number of years. However, unlike most speedways that have come and gone in Colorado over the years, CDR had a re-birth in the early 1980's as CDR TECH-TRACK! In fact the facility even held a NASCAR Winston-West Grand National event in 1982! The rebirth was short lived however and the facility closed forever around 1983. More on that to follow.) The drag strip portion of the Raceways was actually completed in 1958, and there were some drag races held on the strip before the opening of Mr. Langsam's Grand Opening of the 2.8 Mile Road Course in August of 1959 that resided on 280 acres in the small bedroom community (at the time) of Castle Rock, CO.
