Grease Monkey (novel)
These pictures, some of which are in the book "Grease Monkey: Races, Racers and Racism collide head-on" were all uncovered during research on the book. It is based on the true story of Herschel B. Gulley, a prominent dirt tracker of the 1920s, who nearly ran at the Indy 500. His race team partner was a black man at a time when such a partnership simply wasn't permitted.
