This photo takes place at Bakersfield, CA's Mesa Marin Speedway. It was getting close to the end of the Winston West racing season, and Carelli and the Chesrown race team were holding on to a slim points lead. During practice, Carelli crashed his car and the team was in high gear to completely rebuild it. The race turned out to be one of the most demanding of the crew, as the car was ill handling all day. In this photo, from the back of the car forward, Glen Leach loads the car with fuel while David Ifft (crew chief, gray pants) makes adjustments. Joe Garrone (on his knees) waits for Rick Losh (holding the tire and wheel) to stab the wheel onto the lugs. Jackman Ron Briscoe pumps the car up and Rob White waits for Pat Smith to place his tire for impact. Ahead of the Carelli car, you can see Bill Sedgewick awaiting the completion of their pitstop. I think we finished third in this race.
Check out the duct tape on the radios. Our shoe laces were taped down as well. Every precaution was taken to detour a time consuming consequence. If you look closely, Ron Briscoe, the jackman, has two sets of spare lugs hanging from his belt, as does Rick Losh, just behind the tire at beltline. It was a fun day..especially with 120 degree ashalt temperatures!!
