Recently, I called up Archie Johnston. Archie, for those of you who may not know him, hand painted the lettering and striping for hundreds of Colorados greatest race cars. Wayne Stallsworths #27 and #7, Butch Speichers #73, Darrell Stingeries Colt 45 and Larry DeChants Fliver, Snafu, Rattler and Shagnasty cars, just to name a few. Archie has another name, one that was pinned on him for his artistic abilities, and that name is "The Stroker". "Archie the Stroker" that is. Archie has some great pictures that he wanted to share with the racing community. Many of Archies pictures have been in their frames for so long, they have glued themselves to the glass. All of these pictures from his collection, were photographed by me and some are of poor quality. But I love these shots and I have not seen many of these on any other website. With that being said, here we go.....

From the Archie Johnston collection, here is a picture of the late, great Larry DeChant and one of my favorite of all of Larrys creations. This Corvair bodied Late Model/Modified sported a 3/4 ton truck frame. Larry, would run this car as it looks in the picture, as a late model. Then when it came time for the modifieds to run, Larry and his crew would simply lift the covair body from its frame and...WALLA...INSTANT MODIFIED. If you look closely at this photo, above the front tire, you can see the modified body panels underneath the Corvairs skin. This combination proved to be deadly to its competitors. This car flew. He won races every where he took this car. I think Larry drove in every class of racing, and he probably won in every class that he ran in. Thanks Archie.
