From the Dick Surratt collection, here is a photo of Ody Fellows 1961 Ford NASCAR stock car. This car was brand spankin new, sitting in Renos Ford car lot when Ody purchased it with the backing of Odys close friend Tommy Pryor.. Renos Ford was located on west Colfax.
Ody wasted no time. He drove the brand new Ford to Delmont Auto Body, his employer at the time, and began to strip it for a competitive edge. Except for a single drivers seat and rollcage, this car was run like it was brung...Well, almost that is. You see, at this time, Delmont Auto Body, was repairing a police car which was of the same year and model as Odys new ride. In order to create some quick revenue, Ody removed the front sheet metal from his new car and put it on the police car. That gave him some time to do the repairs on the old sheet metal, which was put on his new car. The police car had the correct gear ratio in it as well. So...when the police got the car back, it ran a bit different for reasons that they, the POLICE, could not figure out.
When work was completed, Ody loaded for Shreveport, Louisiana, to test his new NASCAR stocker. As he was qualifying, a part on his front end either broke or came loose, jamming itself into the ground which sent Ody and his new ride for a two time end over ender. And that..was that!
To add salt to his wound...the car hauler blew TEN tires on the way home. The car and hauler were left in Marshal, Texas. Ody would return later to pick up what was left of his NASCAR dream. No complaints from Ody though. Just another small bump in Odys road.
