DON ‘The Red Baron’ SHUTTS
Years before the “Mickey Mouse” #10 Figure Eight became popular with the youngsters at Englewood Speedway,
there was “The Red Baron” #10 Figure 8 wheeled by Don Shutts in 1968 and 1969.

(J.L. McGuire collection) Don and crew pose with their red Broadway Estates Standard Service
’56 Ford in the pits at Englewood in 1968. The Figure 8’s at this time were still real stock with
chrome trim, and in this case, the front grill still attached. Dig Don’s cool Red Baron cartoon on
the fender, and if you look real close, a little Snoopy doll as a hood ornament. Also interesting
is how the headers poke out of little holes cut out of the front fender.

(J.L. McGuire collection) Looks like Snoopy won this round as Don Shutts takes a terrible tumble
through the South/West corner at Englewood in 1968. That’s Pete Brandenburg in the #80 taking
the high line to avoid the rolling Red Baron.
A crowd favorite during his short tenure when he rolled on to the track at Englewood,
Don Shutts and the Red Baron won a few races, then like hundreds of others who gave
the sport a gallant effort, faded into Figure 8 past.
