(Photo by J.L. McGuire) I ran across this photo I took of our own Bruce Rhoades as he was getting ready to hot lap his purple #16 Mini Sprint at the Second Creek Raceway oval in 1996.
I was the track announcer for the C.A.R.C. shows in ’95 and ’96, and man, could these little Sprinters put on a show on that little 1/5 mile flat track oval!
If I’m not mistaken, Bruce barrel-rolled this car in front of the grandstands that year giving us all heart attacks! Luckily he crawled out unharmed to come out and put on a show for us again the next week.
It was a lot of fun announcing out there and it was people like Bruce who made it fun, and gave me plenty to talk about. Stay tuned for a little story on the Second Creek oval in the coming weeks!

Hi Jerry Lee, Bruce's car was a good looking machine. But then Bruce's cars were always sanitary, neatly lettered, and well prepared. It also was pretty quick if I remember correctly. Bruce, Chris Adkins, Larry Pachello, and all the Mini Sprint guys put on a terrific show at SCR. They were fun to watch.
At Second Creek we had an announcer named Jerry Lee Maguire that combined all the good traits of Andy Anderson, Ed Fisher, Jerry VanDyke, Reed Walker, And Ted Douglass all rolled into one package. He had energy and enthusiasm to spare. He did an awsome job. Colorado National would be well advised to get ahold of JL. The crowd would really enjoy his banter. Him calling the figure 8 main would be a hoot. If anyone has any pull with CNS, they should recomend him.
Second Creek was a track that was built with very little money and a lot of volunteer labor by a small group of people that just wanted to race. Many people were down on SCR, yes it wasn't much, but, those involved in building the track deserve a lot of credit. They put a lot of heart into it.

Oh man, thanks for the kind words guys! I always made a better spectator than race car driver, I always admired those guys who risked their lives every weekend just for my entertainment. As for all those great voices of racing past, they were a big inspiration to me, but even those cats were in a league all their own. Those nights out at S.C.R. were really a lot of fun, as the upcoming short story will attest to.:)

Thanks Jerry, you did a great job at SCR and made it very fun. I had some of the most fun that I have ever had racing at Second Creek it was such a family atmosphere with the stands so close to the pits the drivers could mingle with the fans and the announcers.
Thanks Chris, we always took pride in our cars and tried to be well prepared. My crew has always been very deicated as they have been with me for nearly 30 years worth of my racing.
