Archie Romero never tasted a championship or ever even finished a season without some kind of bad luck, but he did manage to stick to it from the late ‘50’s, through the ‘60’s, and well into the ‘70’s at Englewood Speedway.

(J.L. McGuire collection) Archie destroys his #153 through the West turn on June 25, 1961
during Stocker action at Englewood. Rodger Webb, in his “Purple Passion” #50 sedan, and
Marv Slusser, Sr. #39 skate by on the inside. There wasn’t much left of Archie’s car after
this barrel-roll finally ended, and amazingly he was unhurt in the accident. Dig the stock grill
work on Marv’s car #39 as he slides it through the turn with one hand on the wheel and
one hand in the air!

(Photo by Mel Keller/Irwin Fogel coll.) Archie Romero (right) and crew member Pete Graham
pose with Archie’s Modified entry for 1970. This little buzz-bomb carried a 289 c.i. Studebaker
engine. Note the crazy wallpaper numbers on this Mod. It’s said that Archie was one of the
first to run a fiberglass body in the division at Englewood.

That is a classic picture. That coupe is getting some serious air-time.
