Clearly the guy in the #4 car should be wearing a full face helmet. :noid:

I always thought "Knobbies" were the rear tires.

The 2nd photo is the legendary car builder, and owner Wally Meskowski, having a "conversation" with Chuck Booth. Wally must be telling Chuck what he thinks of his driving style.

Did racing photos like this inspire Detroit in the '50s? The '57 Caddy front-bumper below may be proof enough to rest my case! ~VB

Whoa! That pic of the Coupes starting FOUR deep has got to be one of the coolest I've ever seen. Would have loved to have been there for that race! I'm betting that almost half the cars were in a pile-up before the second lap.:red:
I also love the "pull my finger" trick at 100 m.p.h. photo!

Yeah, and I count about 60 cars that fill up the front stretch from turn 4 to turn 1,on a short track!!! No room to pass there! :jawdrop:

According to Thomas L. Luce's book, Memories of The California Jalopy Assoc. there were 77 cars posing there on the front stretch of Balboa Stadium in San Diego. It was a 1958 charity race for TOYS FOR TOTS, and they lined up for a publicity photo. In todays street rod market, that's a good two million dollars worth of old iron! I did read somewhere that during the fifties the CJA would run special holiday events where 66 cars lined up three abreast for the start. Their version of an INDY start, I guess, only twice as many cars, and on a short unpaved track, no less. Had to have lost a lot of cars during one of those. Unpaved tracks were murder on the old coupes and sedans.

Hey Bill, thanks for the info. I thought there had to be a reason for all those cars to be there. The pole sitter would be in turn 4 before the rear cars got started. I'm sure that at one time or another, every car was in some event so I bet the fans got their share of excitment that night.~Olen :racing:
