I just found out we lost Wayne McGuire of Grayson, Ky. in September at the age of 80. He won literally hundreds of races in this super modified in the midwest before a crash at New Bremen (Ohio) ended his career. He's shown accepting the checkered flag for a victory lap after winning a 500-lap race on the quarter-mile Fairgrounds Motor Speedway track in Louisville, Ky. in 1965. That's a beardless indybigjohn (I was not yet 27 at the time) handing him the flag. RIP old friend.

What a nice looking super! The auction story very interesting. Glad it was saved. Wouldn't it be fun to go back in time to watch a field of these cars on a paved quarter mile?

The McGuire's in Kentucky are no relation to us, but we have a younger generation that is scattered all over the world. Regards to Wayne's family.~Olen

Man, what a beautiful car. Isn't that a Pontiac hiding under the hood? Wow, the torque must have been unbelievable. Thanks indybigjohn far sharing this pic. Please keep 'em coming

Pontiac? Yes. The center exhaust ports are close together, almost creating a single port for the center exhaust pipe.

Definitely a Pontiac. Don't know the displacement, but when Wayne sent in his entry form for the 500-lappers at Louisville, in the spots for "Bore" and "Stroke" he wrote in "Big" and "Long."

The car was restored by Joe Baird of Shelbyville, Ind., another old friend of mine from my Louisville days, and I got to see it after he had finished in the 90s. They called me at IRP and wanted to do a photo session with it on the oval for Stock Car Racing magazine, because Wayne had won a 200-lap or 250-lap race with it there in the 60s. How was I going to refuse that?

Wayne even showed up and brought the trophy from the race.
