Chuck Palmer called me to get the word around that his father, Don Palmer, passed away on Tuesday morning. He suffered from MS the last several years of his life. Don was half of the racing Palmer brothers who changed from Fords to the famous, ground-shakin', thunderin' Hudsons. Don was an extremely quick but smooth driver. Don's brother John died in 1962 just prior to the racing season opener.
Details will be in Friday December 11, 2009 Denver Post. The viewing will be Thursday December 17 at Horan-McConahy at 3101 South Wadsworth and the graveside services will be held at Fort Logan on Friday the 18th. I speak for the CARC in saying that he was one of our best and our deep condolences go out to the Palmer family.

I loved to watch and hear that great old Hudson...Rest in Peace Don.
I have told people about sitting in the covered grandstands while watching a race. The sixes, whether they be Ford or Chevy would pass by...without much difference in sound. But when the number 78 made its way down the front stretch, you would almost need to cover your ears!! That old Hudson just roared and Don could put her through some holes too!!

My condolences to the Palmer family. I know we all have varied memories of those racing years depending on the years and tracks we were at. Don and John were a couple of my heros. I really admired Don for continuing after John died, not a surprise from a true racer. Don was a gentleman and a clean driver, always a threat to run up front. Thanks for the great memories Don.
RIP
Chuck

My sympathies to Gene, Charlie and the whole Palmer family.I got to know the Palmer brothers from racing with them at Lakeside, Great guys and those Hudsons were awesome! Sometimes, I would see Don riding his bicycle on Lookout Mtn. Road in the early days of his ill health when I lived in that area. He would stop and we would visit and discuss our days at Lakeside. He was one of the most gentleman-like drivers and really a nice man. RIP, Don.

I had the privilege of being introduced to Mr. Palmer in the early 1970's at Lakeside. He was a soft spoken real gentleman. His Hudson was in fact very loud. But for the years it was run it was state of the art. He was a terrific driver and a CARC board member as well.
To the Palmer family may we extend our most sincere condolences.

1961, I was on school break, picked up my girlfriend and drove to Denver to take in the races at Lakeside. What a night, discovering a pair of Hudsons tearing up the track. They were even featured in the program that night. Those Hudsons were always fun to watch. So many memories as don stayed with the Hudsons for many years. Always sad to hear this kind of news. My condolences to the family.
