Wow! That's great stuff. The two rail guard rail tells me that it's pre-1953.

Fabulous :thumb:

What fun stuff to see again . . . Midgets, Lakeside, Hot lapping.

Yes pre '53.

Number 62 is the Kenz and Leslie KK/Offy. Johnny Tolan (?)

The number 3 car: Don Burn ? the Miles Spickler KK/Offy? Not sure.

Number 1 car ?

Wow, this is great stuff! I noticed right away that the east stands were still uncovered and the turn 2 open stands were not there, either! What I REALLY loved was that the judge's guard rail wasn't there, but in its place was the concrete protective barrier. What a joy it must have been to hit the sharp corner of that baby at speed!
Also, go down to the bottom and there is a very short, but really cool, video of the CARC modifieds at Lakeside, too!:applaud:

Like they say "Loose is fast". Man did you see how those guys hung the tail ends out, exiting the corner? Great, great stuff.

What a fantastic video! Does anyone know who's video that is? His YouTube account name is titus58. Truly incredible footage.

If that's Johnny Tolan in the #1 Kenz&Leslie Offy that would be 1948, He used #1 after winning the title in 1947, and I think Joe Giba is in the #62 for the 48' season. Tolan won the 47 title he was in the "Continental Airlines" #62. That's Miles Spicklers Offy #3, would have been Roy Bowe in that car. That's truly the best video I've ever seen on any website!! Man I could watch that 100's of times, incredible. I'm going to say that film was shot in 1948.

Must be a practice day, no leaves on the trees, and young boys and women in the work area near the race cars. Terry, if that is indeed 1948, that's the year your father won is only RMMRA feature, and he did it in that very #1 car in the film! Roy Bowe won the 48' title in that #3 car, I'm using Bill Hill's book as a reference here.

Amazing footage, and for 8mm film shot at that time had to be carefully preserved to be that clear. I remember the cameras in those days. You had to wind them up like a watch, because they were not battery operated in those days. Also you had to take the film out and turn it around half way through shooting, which would give you about three and a half minutes on each spool. Amazing stuff....~Olen

You guys are amazing! All that historical knowledge. You could team up with Bill for a revised edition of his book. Its fantasic to read what you all know.

Makes me want to get all Mom & Dad's pics done so you can tell me who everyone is and give more hostory for the shots. sadly, my time has bee too limited (dang work) and my computer is on its death bed (sad for a guy that makes his living in the software industry).

I'm really glad to have posted this vid. I wouldn't have found it on you-tube if I didn't know to use "lakeside" in the search. "midgets" returns some strange stuff if you don't add a few other words ;-/

Need to try "englewood", "gilmore", "balboa"...

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

I think you are all on the right track. That surely is Joe Giba. look at the black helment. A few shots of the black car I beleive is the K & L V-8 60 which in 48 was driven by Brad Bradford and also later Johnny Smith. I am pretty sure that is Johnny Tolan in the car that day at this practice but he left and "The Count" and Smith taded the ride if my memory is corect from dads storys. I can't remember just when Tolan left K & L if before the season or just at the start. Tolan ran the AAA Chicago area offy circuit that dad race with Loyd in 48. Beautiful movies, PRICELESS don't you agree?

Jimmy, Joe, I'm guessing you guys have some midget stuff the rest of us guys would love to see. My dad only kept a few photo's and programs, which are priceless to me, I think my mom felt it was more of a bother, so dad just did not collect a lot of memorabilia. When you get a chance please post what you can, I did not think I would ever get to see 1940's era midgets, at Lakeside Speedway on film, so this video really blew my mind! Seems to me I remember reading that Tolan started 48' in the #1 car, won a couple early season main events, then went back east to run AAA.

both of these pics are labled 1947. One is with Johnnie Tolan, Mom (Ehtel/Pucky) is the trophy girl. The second is Johnny Smith. Both are Duchess Studio photos.

Thanks for the info. Mitch. Now I gotta watch it again. I'll let my sister know. She is on this site too.

Off the top of my pointed head, 1946 Tolan wins the RMMRA title in Bussards rail frame #6. Then moves to the new K&L Kurtis #62 "Continental Airlines" car in 1947 and wins the title in that car. Joe Giba moves into the #62 Offy, and Tolan is in a new Kurtis #1 for 1948. I was not there so I'm going by memory of what I've read. I love investigating this stuff it's better than watching TV, or shopping, for sure. Johnny Smith and Walt Von Tillius share the #1 car in 1948, after Tolan wins a couple early season mains, and splits to the mid-west and the big time. I think Brad Bradford also drove the #1 at some point in 1948, maybe you guys can verify that? Not disputing the photo's, maybe they were dated incorrectly at some point? Still the best film clip on the internet so far.

the dates/years could be off... Mom dated most of these late in life, so memories could be off. The drivers and autographs are right on though :) Mom always had a crush on Mr. Tolan, along with 90% of the ladies around as i heard the stories.

Moms memory was a little off Jimmy. The #1 KK K&L offy didn't come til the winter of 47 -48. The Pic would seem to comfirm what you said Mitch . Tolan won a couple of early features then left and 'The Count" drove it next. I needed a little help remembering the correct events so I cheated and looked in Bill Hills book.

I'm just "bumping" this thread so Patti Bowe can find in easier.

Hey Patti!
