John Pachello is a legendary name to racing fans in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. Johns cars won countless championships at Lakeside Speedway in Denver, but also took many trips to the winners circle in surrounding states. Although fans are quick to remember the late great Jim Malloy as the most famous of #19's chafeurs, Don Wilson made his way to 4 championships while driving Johns beautiful modified.
In this picture, while Don Wilson was vacationing, Larry DeChant was chosen to ride the black beauty. Others to have the honor were Merle Burrow and of course Terry Daniels, who also drove this car to a Championship.

Don't forget Jack Graham. He drove Mr. Pachello's #19 after Merle Burrow. He drove in '73, '74', and '75. I think he won championships all 3 years. I know
'73 for sure, had something like a 50 point lead going into the last night. In '74 Dan Day won 11 or 12 main events But I think Jack still won the championship. I believe he had to quit driving because of heart problems. I think thats what finally ended his life. RIP Jack.

Always liked this version of Pachello's #19 that had the chromed grill shell and all that nice pinstriping. Barnum Liquors was sponsor from about 1960 through I believe 1966. The flathead shown in the photo from Thomas suggests that this may have been 1960 or 1961. By '63, maybe earlier, he had switched to a straight six. My favorite engine that was used in that car was an ArDun that was used for special run whatcha brung end of season special races. Here's a photo of that car with probaly Jim Malloy driving during an open competition race at the fairgrounds in Pueblo, early sixties. The Ardun was in place, and simply ran away from the field.

If I remember right, John Pachello's 19D began life as #62 that John drove himself.
John had also built a second 19. One with a six and one with a flathead, the flathead car was labled "SB" for "Second Best" per Don Wilson. Fritz Wilson had even drove the flathead 19 one night because his car got crunched, so they made the 19 look like 49.
The #1 Ardun/Merc was a Fiat (Topolino) bodied car that belonged to the Plue's, Gene, Doug, and their dad, it that was a part of the run-what'a-brung Jet Coupes. The #1 Ardun/Merc was the fastest car in the run-what'a-brung class until the Malloy brothers built the #5 car, the first time #5 came out after a few warm-up laps, Jim timed in with a 12.92. Bob Wallace and Pat Fraizier explained it this way, somebody at Lakeside said that the 12 second range would never happen, Jerry Malloy said we'll see about that.
The open season race meets were held after the regular season was finished, those races were run on Sunday afternoon.

John Pachello and 62D. Black with lots of chrome.
Late 50's. Possibly a trophy dash win, note the small trophy.

I stopped by and visited with John and Mary 3 weeks ago. John still has both cars. I asked if I could sit down with them and get their stories, and they agreed. The car that was driven by Jim Malloy, sits on its original trailer on the south side of the garage. The seat is still in it, the original that Mr. Malloy sat in. The other car is sitting inside the garage exactly where it was unloaded after racing at Lakeside in 1987. I will get some photos and a story as soon as I get a minute.

I can't imagine a Denver race fan over 30 years old, who doesn't remember the Pachello #19, truly a classic race car.

The #62 car is the first one that John co-owned with Tedo Spano. Tedo drove the car, but John took it up to Cheyenne after they finished building it just to test it out. He won the race up there; I believe it was his only race night as a driver. That would have been 1959. John took over the #19 after Bill Ward gave it up when he quit racing. I asked John when he was inducted into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame why he chose the #19. His response: it was one of the few available at the time.

Looking forward to that story Rick. By the way, Mary has kept up their scrapbook very well. Got a peak at it a few years ago, some neat stuff from when John was just getting started with the #62 cars. Hope you get a chance to see it.

Thanks, carc7! I always knew this #62D photo was from Intermountain Speedway in Cheyenne, WY because the photo belonged to my Dad, Lou Wendzel, who very rarely attended the races at Lakeside Speedway after 1953. Plus, the story that was passed down to me is that John won the trophy in a Mechanic's Race, not in a regular-race that night. ~VB

I know the 19 car well. It was tough in racing season I couldn't get my pickup repaired. Uncle Johnny was too busy rebuilding his race car each week.
