Just stumbled across this site tonight and love it. I grew up in the 60's watching mods run at my hometown track "Shangri-la" in Owego, NY and on occasion my Dad and I would travel up to Oswego and watch the supermodifieds run at that famous 5/8 mile track. Joined the Air Force in 68 and eventually was stationed at the Air Force Academy and got involved helping Dick Humphrey on his car at Pikes Peak Speedway and even raced a little. Left the Springs in Sept of 73 and for some crazy reason moved back to Owego so I could pay all the high NY taxes and haven't been smart enough to leave the area yet. I have always loved the supermods and got involved helping Scott Martel out in his # 14 ISMA winged supermodified for several years. I build training simulators for a living and hope to retire in a couple more years. I now spend my spare time enjoying my grandsons.

hi, im new to the site as well. if you were around super mods at all, then you remember the Purdy Duece! my dad used to pit for Howard Purdy and drivers like Ronnie Lux and Bently Warren. i am only 36 y/o and have never even been to a race at oswego. but i can recite almost every story told about the imfamous Duece. i was lucky enough to lay my hands on it about 10 years ago in the barn at the Purdy farm. where it still sitson the trailer just as it came off the track after winning at Oswego. i hope to someday be part of its restoration.

Welcome to ARM. In 1991, during speed week at Volusia County Speedway, I had the opportunity to watch Bently Warren in action. He was real fast. It was cold that year and the humidity was thick. As the supers came by, you could see vapor trails coming off the wings.....first time I'd ever seen that.....Crazy Baby!!

Danny,
I do indeed remember the Purdy Duece at Oswego. I believe the last time I seen it was when Jimmy Winks drove it and it was always set up so tight that the left front wheel always came off the ground about a foot when it came out of a corner. It would be so cool if the car were restored and brought to Oswego on Classic Weekend (labor day weekend) and displayed. Being Bentley Warren is still driving (and probably will be for another 100 years) maybe he would even take a lap or 2 in it. There are many pictures of it on the web..
Go to: www.retrorockets.org for tons of pictures of supermods at Oswego, Sandusky and Star speedway. In the photo archives section pictures of the "duece" can be found in Volume 1, 2,9,21,25 and 28.
Thanks for the reply !!

thanks Jay, i would love to see that as well. i know the sprint car hall of fame asked to restore and display it quite a few years ago and Howard declined. he recently said that he believes that with a few updates the Duece could be a contender again. somthin tells me it would be.
i wish i had been part of such a historic and inovative time in auto racing.
now a days you cant race it unless speedway sells it, and imca stamps it.
