Hello all! My name is Scott Kennedy. Just found this site and am glad I did. I grew up in Colo.Spgs. and was involved in all forms of the race scene from watching all types as a kid in the 60s, to working at Widner Automotive :rail: in the late 70s. Was a member of the Stockers car club, I guess I still am technically. I will post some memories as I get going here, thanks for a great site!

Good to have you on the board Scott . There are a number of us on this board that remember Widner Automotive . I started buying my speed equipment from Dan when he had Big 4 Auto parts over on Colorado Ave . Then i made the Nevada Ave. store my home away from home . Shopped at the Academy Blvd. location a few times . I left the Springs in 1976 , so i probably didn't know you .
There are some great threads here regarding the circle track racing in Colorado Springs . Even one thread displaying a Pikes Peak Speedway program from the early 50s . I look forward to anything you can add about racing in southern Colorado , or interesting stories about Widner Automotive . Maybe even some stories of Dans' racing exploits . And please add any photos you may have .

John Talley raced modifieds in Colorado Springs and the Denver area . I never saw him in a modified , he was already racing late models at Sportsmans when i first saw him . He had a black 56 Ford with a 406 Ford engine in it . His sponsor was Talley Refrigeration which he owned . John still lives in the Springs .

John used to come up and race at Lakeside Speedway in the late 1950's and early 1960's. I had breakfast with him and he told me that he thought the guys at C-Springs had it all together, until the CARC boys came down to race there. The CARC flat handed them their lunch, so he towed 2 cars (his and his wife's) up from the Springs to race at Lakesdie and learn how to do it!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I worked at Widners from 77 till like 85-ish. I worked at both Springs stores and opened and managed the Pueblo location. Great place to work for a young man who was into cars. I met all the local racers of the time, and became friends with some. Also met most of the national guys who came through the Springs as well. Made connections with some factory reps and I worked the Mile Highs for Centerline for about 5-6 years. But the true pleasure was working for Dan Widner, very smart businessman and a genuine nice guy. I learned a great deal about the business from him, that I still use to this day. Unfortunately Dan passed away last November. :checker:
