Yep, 18 years old, about to turn 19. And let me tell you as a life long midget fan, and many time Belleville attendee (and competitor), I never saw anybody put a whippin' on the rest of the field like that guy did that year. Gordon had never even seen Belleville before, let alone drive on it. He broke the track record, won his prelim main, then lapped the entire field, except previous winner Steve Knepper in 2nd place, in the Saturday night feature. After the race my wife said "Well, I'm not coming back here again if that's the way it's going to be". I told her, "Don't worry, he (Jeff Gordon) won't be coming back here again". I knew he was destined for the big time.

I was at belleville that year man was he hooked up. we were pitted three cars from jeff that weekend and i think i spent more time with him then with our car. i tried to buy his diet pepsi glasses from him but he wouldn't do it what a piece that would have been in a collection. i have a few pictures that i took before and after champion ship night and even sent on off to have sighned. he and rollie back then were very pleasent to talk to.
