Here's an old "Indy" from a few miles away. It's Mario at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the Dean Van Lines Hawk, 1965. I think this was his first Indy Car win. It's a Ken Coles photo. He's headed up the backstretch, outside the backstretch of the oval, the "wrong" way. They ran the "short" course, cutting off everything west of the drag strip, because there were so many roadsters still running. In this configuration, the only right hander was Turn 4.

dmckim, please keep em coming, fantastic. Hey indybigjohn, didn't Jud Larson actually out qualify a few rear engine cars, in a upright dirt car, for that race on the road course?

I believe he did, Mitch. One of my favorite Jud Larson stories was about the first time he tried to qualify for the 500. He was having trouble getting off the turns in the roadster, and somebody asked what they could do to help. Jud said, "Send guys down inside 2 and 4 and have them throw clods at me."
