In the early years of Lakeside Speedways stock car racing program, there were so many cars that they had to break the cars into several divisions. One of these divisions was the "Hooligan" race, which featured some of the up and coming drivers and teams and/or teams that did not have the money to invest in their cars. Bob Brown raced for many years in this division before finally breaking into the "B" stocks. At the end of Bobs career, he would make the "A" main events on several occasions. Bob was one of those "Die Hard" racers. He embraced his "Perfect Attendance" trophies like they were championship trophies. He and his wife Betty were some of the people that helped build the foundation of the CARC's successful history. Betty Brown raced in the Powder Puff division and later, their sons Jim and Rob tested the 1/5th mile paved oval as well. Jim went on to win the Limited Late Model championship in 1985. The Brown family gave me my shot at lettering race cars and Bobs car was the first racer that my sister Jodi and I painted. That was in 1967. I went on to paint and pit for Bob, Jim, Betty and Rob for 20 years.

Superstroke, thanks for submitting that write-up on Bob Brown. Can't help but think of him whenever I remember or see a photo of a yellow #77. Hard to imagine, but he didn't always have that number nor were his early #77 cars yellow. Earlier numbers of cars driven by Mr. Brown included #32, #43, #47 and #144 (team mate to #44 Gus Thomas)

A little bit or worthless trivia is that while most guys who built their cars using the '30-31 Model A body, the #77 shown above is a '28-29. Look similar except the belt line is a little different, and the tops were about 2 inches taller. Two others come to mind who also used that year of Model A, one of the #51 cars of Al Starr, and one of the #45 cars when Roy Jackson (I think ?) was the driver.

kudos to superstroke, the cars you did for the brown family were some of "thee" best looking cars EVER at lakeside!!! one that really jumps to mind was the ironically car from '77 season where they put the 350 fender badges on the cowl.[at the time the rules were 331 c.i. max]
