This fall model car kit producer Revell is set to release some new kits. Pay particular attention to the PDF first page of Revell's Fall Release Catalog, best viewed at 50% or 75%. It shows two new kits, Kurtis Kraft midgets, one with an Offenhauser and other with a V-8 60 Ford; both come with trailers.
I can hardly wait, I guess I'll have to. The release date is not set, but believe me I''l track this very carefully.

Webby . . . Yes sir, this is some great news. I get several of these Revell KK's both Offy and V-8 60 Ford; four of which will be put in diorama form of a four lap trophy dash line up at Lakeside. You remember the four for four, my favorite event, next is the 40 or 50 lap main event.
Did you ever see one of those 100 lappers that were run at the Arapahoe County Fair Grounds in the 50's. We attended several of them, including the one in which Don Malone had his fatal crash.
I have a few of the older Monogram, circa 1954 and subsequent reissues, that I've built yet.
You know I still personally believe the most loyal fans yet today are the fans of Lakeside, CARC old stockers and modifieds, and the RMMRA midgets.

I have never been much of a model builder but I think I might give a few of these new midgets a shot. Sounds fun!

Hey Thomas,
Like Webby I'm not a model builder but will try both of the new releases. Keep us posted on the release if you could.
Looks like fun, have not built a model since I was a kid.

I think I'll buy a handfull too. Let's see, I can change up the colors and numbers and build one of Dad's cars, or Roy Bowe's, Johnny Tolan... etc, etc, etc.
Did you see the McLaren Can Am cars too? sweet!

Flash back . . . Here are some oldie's that I started with in the mid 50's they were fun builds. It will show up once in awhile on ebay . . . expensive. A few reissues have been offered over the years. The Monogram Midget listed below has appeared on ebay quite a bit of late, auctioned off for $12 to $50. I have a couple of each already.
1. Revell's '32 Ford Jalopy c1956. This was a hot item for us Lakeside and Englewood junkies. First issue was black plastic, reissues gray plastic.
2. Monograms Midget Race Car c1954. What else can one say it's a midget. First issue was yellow plastic, all reissues red plastic.

Thomas, I met a guy here in Katy that has that Noel Carpenter car! he bought it from LeRoy Byers, and he's trying to trace it's history. It was a Roy Richter built car, and this guy is currently researching it's past. That will take some modifications, no head rest, and a motorcycle engine (Drake), but man would that look cool! I'm gonna' buy a boat load of these, and go on a model building spree, have not built a model in years (well I built a cool Titanic ship for my son a couple years ago), can't wait!

Oh yeah, we need to figure out how to build a accurate Charley Peck nose piece so we can build those 50's 60's era cars!

I did one with the larger scale Monogram Midget for Ed's number 5 car. Though the slope of the nose was a bit too roundish, it worked. I open the grill opening on the sides to accommodate turning the grill insert sideways for the horizontal grill bar look, and fill in the top edge where the vertical grill left a bit of a thumb nail gap; I built the car for Ed. That led to builing a pair of 93's one for Ray Koch and the other for Frank Mantello; that lead to about 5 more builds, 55, 6, 15, 1, and 4. My favorite is Koch's number 93.
Didn't the blue Sam Rodriquez #27 Offy have the same nose.
Does anyone recall the nose on Curt Stockwell's number 3.
Wait, I know, I'll go to my reference books, The Mighty Midgets and Decades of Daring.

I have always thought the Monogram Midget c1954 was not a Kurtis Kraft but a Roy Richter car, it just has that look.
When I built the two number 93 (no head rest) cars for Ray Koch and Frank Mantello, the conversion was easily done to the larger Monogram Midget (c1954 and re-issues), by cutting the head rest off and filling in the vee'd gap with a piece of plastic made to fit and sand smooth, then using modeler's body putty to reform the upholstery trim.
So I have that figured out. As for the motorcycle engine, there several Harley's represented in 24th and 25 scale, so it will be a matter of outfitting it with the best representation of the Drake. The old Monogram Midget c1954 and subsequent re-issues is 18th scale, and there are a few 18th scale Harley engines available.
Here is a car with no head rest, don't know whose it is, but it looks like a Kurtis Kraft.
Caption at the bottom of photo when opened states, "Me in my dads midget 1947" - It is not not me, Thomas E.

Yes sir I saw those midgets, even with price it is mighty tempting, but I have four of that old re-issue already. Besides I have other projects that I am modeling. Odie Fellows #66 Willys he ran at Englewood, Pat Fraizer's #16 Pinto and #16 'A' body CARC modified, a Dan Gurney #121 '65 Ford.

Update - Revell's 2010 Fall Releases - MIDGETS! Is on schedule.
The test shoots have been made and sent to various hobby and model car shows and exhibitions. These new midget kits recieved high marks and high praise.
The tooling for both needs some fine tuning; they are still scheduled for a November/December release.

A thread from a model building website about these new kits. There is also another link in that thread to a post regarding these kits. Seems that everyone is more than excited about them and many modelers are going to be kit bashing for the V8-60's to put in their hot rods. Better get them quick as I'm sure they will go lightning quick!
I think I already see an issue with the fuel injected Offy...looks to me like the intakes aren't bell-shaped, but hoses.

Thomas,
When you 1st posted that photo, I was pretty sure it was one of the famous Don Mackay Offys out of Sydney. Terry has posted what is I'm certain, the same car..... from another angle. Photo was taken in Brisbane Australia 10 days ago....not sure who brought this car to Australia...Tattersall or Warriner. Some home work for me.
