Mitch G asked to see some close-up photos of my 1/4 scale RC sprintcars...thanks for the interest Mitch....so here you are mate!
1/4 scale speedway cars have become my passion since I first discovered them in American magazines in the early 1980s. With nowhere to race them here in Sydney, I dropped off the idea until July 1998 when I saw a story on 1/4 scale sprintcars racing in Sydney about 35 miles from my house.
Geez...how long has this been going on I thought? 4 weeks later I owed my 1st 1/4 scale sprintcar built here in Sydney by BULLET Racecars.

This is my latest 1/4 scale Bullet sprintcar...over 3 feet long, 2 feet high and runs a 25cc 2 stroke race engine, that will make it behave just like a full size sprintcar . We race on dirt so that makes it all the more exciting. These little pocket rockets can throw dirt 15 feet plus when sliding through the turns! This car is brand new in preparation for the upcoming Australian Title to be held in Sydney, June 13/14.

The #8 Pacesetter sprintcar, again over 3 feet long, is extremely rare. It was built in 1980 in California by Jeff Schmidt, credited with being the 1st person in the world to build 1/4 scale cars. This car is still brand new...never been run in all that time. I was lucky enough to have a contact in America that got this car out of San Antonio Texas for me last year. These models rarely if ever come up for sale in the USA, NEVER in Australia!

The 3rd car is an 1/4 scale RC midget that I first saw here in Sydney 20 years ago and lost track of it. It's body and wheels are by Jan Gilmer, out of Minnesota USA. Gilmer's cars are really rare! Just recently traced down the owner who agree to part with the car to add to my collection that includes.... 2 mid 1980s WCM 1/4 scale sprintcars, out of the USA, in the process of restoration, a brand new Quickdraw sprintcar out of the USA and my original 1998 Australian Title winning sprintcar, that one day will be restored to its Title winning glory.

Hey Bob, thanks for displaying those pics. They are awesome!! I never realized 'til now that 1/4 scale models even existed. I for one would like to see more of them, and maybe some action shots would be neat. Thanks again,~Olen

Olen,
The size of these cars makes them the most realistic of RC cars. That makes then easy to work on in comparison to the smaller 1/10th and 1/8th scale cars.
Here's a photo from the main straight at Luddenham 1/4 Scale Speedway.

Man, they take those corners like the real thing. That one looks like you had the camera in the car itself. I bet that would make a great video clip. Thanks Bob, that's been a real lesson for me. ~Olen

This is the 1st time with the video camera in the car. The end result is worth the wait! Skip through till about the 2 minute mark, when the race starts.

Great video!

Man... that looks like a blast!!

Thanks for the posts Bob!! amazing stuff, those cars look awesome going through the corner, what a blast that must be. I got to visit Jack Skellinger in the late 80's at his shop in southern CA. he was building 1/4 scale Halibrand quick change rear ends, what a work of art, and they were using them in R/C cars. Do you guys use q/c rear ends, or some other rear axel, drive assembly?

Bob, here's some stuff I've dug up about 1/4 scale models. An ad for the Pacesetter sprint car from "Open Wheel Magazine" May 1985. And a feature on 1/4 scale RC cars from "Circle Track Magazine" April 1987. In the color photo, bottom right on the page with the headline "Greater Possibilities" you can kind of see the miniature Halibrand quick change.

Mitch,
I have 4 quick-change rear ends in my collection. 2 locally built Bullet QCs and 2 American Skellenger QCs. I used to run them in my sprinters, however modern centre drive belt technology makes for much less work, weight and worry so I have gone that way! Thanks for posting that article on the Coors #18 car. I've not seen it before.

Webby,
HaHa... Wasn't a threat all weekend. Chased the set-up and never quite found it....at the end of the qualifying heats I was starting out of position 2 in the C Main. Geez that's crook!!!
Lost drive while leading and looking for a transfer to the back of the B...and that was the meet over.:banghead:
1st time since 1999 that I haven't made the A Main.
Ah well...that's racing....we'll be back next year to try again

Hey Bob, our "backyard" track has weeds and grass growing on it this season from lack of use. If it wasn't such a long drive from Denver to there it would have been fun to join you guys!;)
