Forgotten or unknown history....
I had forgotten, that Arleen Hiss was the first women to compete in a USAC championship (Indy car) race. She qualified 21st out of 22 cars for the March 1976 Phoenix race on the Phoenix International Raceway one mile oval. She finished 14th (last car running) 12 laps off the lead lap. Here she is.

Who do you think was the best female race driver of all-time?

Re: Forgotten or unknown history....
Welllll........if you go off winning races, Shirley Muldowney by a mile. She won the NHRA top fuel championship a couple of times? After that maybe Sara Fisher, who although never won a national title, did make the Indy 500 field a few times, and ran midgets, winged sprints, on dirt and pavement. Sara is a versatile race car driver. I can't put Danica Patrick up there too far on the list, as she has very few win's in anything but that Indy car race in Japan, and maybe some go-kart and formula ford races? She, Patrick, is just not that competitive or versatile, in my opinion. Neither was Muldowney versatile, but she dominated her class of racing for several seasons.

Shirley is a 3 time top fuel champion, also competed in Nitro Funny cars earlier in her career.
