Re: Name this track
A winnah!! I spent many nights as a youth in these grandstands and many more as an adult in the pits. My first recollection of going here was probably in 1960 or 61. By that time, the crashwalls...

Re: S.O.W. Chevy at Ascot
If you have Joe Scalzo's book "American Dirt Track Racer", you'll find a picture of this car spinning out at El Centro. Looks like Bob McCoy's "headin for the basement" in anticipation of going for a...

Re: The Agajanian 98 dirt car
I remember Billy from the early 60's selling "cover lenses" to the drivers at Ascot in the years after his injury. Carmen Schroeder did the "Gilmore Roars Again" reunions to benefit Billy.

Re: The Agajanian 98 dirt car
I remember this car was owned by Lyle Greenman in 1963 and the mechanic on the car was named Pat Combs. They stopped at the house to pick up my dad on the way to Sacramento for the annual hundred...

Re: The Ghosts of old race tracks
How about the legendary Manzanita outside of Phoenix?
Looks like when this Satalite photo was taken, the demolition had already begun.

Re: The Ghosts of old race tracks
Here's a ghost image of where South Bay Speedway 117 was located southeast of San Diego.
This was one of the tracks in addition to Ascot that the CRA ran at. I was fortunate enough to run at both in...

Re: Missing Leonard Surdam Chevy sprint car
How cool to see these old pics. In the one above of Walkup/Surdam taken at Whiteman stadium I noticed my dad in the upper left. he was a CRA official all through the 60's, 70's and 80's.

New "old guy"
Found this site a while ago- just decided to register. I used to race with CRA in the late 70's into the 80's. I grew up watching races at Ascot in the 60's and really enjoy the old pics!
Now i'm...

Re: 1980's California Racing Association
I was fortunate enough to get to race with these two in the early 80's. Dean retired in I think 85 and Eddie continued on till Ascot closed in '90 and maybe a little after.

Re: Old Foyt sprintcar sold....
As a kid growing up in the 60's I got to see this car run. The picture of the car as #4 spinning out is actually former flattrack racer Don Hawley (not Cantrell) early in his sprint car career.
