Back in the USA

Employment took me out of the country an extended period of time but I'm back home again.

Nice to be back and catch up on Midget racing topics.

Post more later.

Re: Do you know what that is?

I do not think anyone will guess the surface, as it has never been duplicated again.
Walnut shells.
There was a nut company that made a mountain of walnut shells.
Somebody had a wild idea of...

I;ll give a hint.

Re: Those cool bonnets they wore

Thanks, seems those checkerboard patterns were popular.
Wish we had ran in the Denver area as most of you seem to be from around there.
IMCA, USAC and some midwest sanctions were our cup of tea...

Those cool bonnets they wore

Back in the 40's and 50's drivers came up with some strange looking painted helmets.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Anyone seen this 50's sprint before?

This older Sprint Car will be auctioned off April 21 in Wisconsin.
I have nothing to do with it, just found this browsing.
Go to www.gavinbros.com for more info.

Re: Aircraft engine in a Sprint Car

Just love this place, to think it took me so long to find it.
Everyone is so helpful.

Got an email from someone who just looks on here from time to time, telling me how to find more info on this....

Aircraft engine in a Sprint Car

Maybe I've lost it but my mind is telling me back in the early 60's those silly people that live on the west coast were experimenting with aircraft engines in their Sprint Cars.
Anyone having one of...

This is how we towed them back then

Seen a bunch of old Midgets photos, felt some might get a kick out what we pulled those old Midgets with.
Yes, even said "Tow Car" just ahead of the front door.
Check out the wheel spokes.

As...

Re: Remember you could buy Midget at Monkey wards

There was a national 1/4 Midget event in Penn. (back in the early 60's) with a cool name.
The Lollypop Nationals.:chuckle:

Remember you could buy Midget at Monkey wards

For you younger Midget buffs, there was a day when you could buy a full blown 1/4 midget from the local Montgomery Wards stores.
Here is one of the ads from 1960, giving details about the car.

Re: Can you name these 1950's drivers

Pretty sharp.
Want to take a stab at the driver in the #29?
We had the pleasure of running aginst all three of these legends at onetime or another.

Re: When you had to "drive" the cars

Crewman had to be real men as well.
No impact wrench here.
No aluminum 2 pump jack here.
Lugs had to be hand started on standard studs.

Can you name these 1950's drivers

The #3 USAC Champ Car driver was running the last race of 1959 season at Sacramento. He had not seen victory circle yet in his young career but this would turn out to be his first of many wins.
Can...

Re: Were we a little crazy back then?

I'll agree just a little about being tossed out.
Many have seen the pic I put up showing my driver getting thrown out of the car as it rolled.
I said we were lucky for this that day because the car...

Re: Were we a little crazy back then?

Again, not so much crazy but different for the times.
Mel Kenyon was said to be the driver who introduced the "FULL" roll cage Midget to USAC.
Here it is that first outing back in 1969 in San Jose....

When you had to "drive" the cars

Dirt track, full windshield, open helmet, goggles, full floors and firewalls, rear window, no ventalation, dust so thick you could not see 50 feet.
Photo says it all and this USAC driver won the...

Re: Another strange looking Midget

Not so much these were "strange" looking but they were different for the time periods.

Car #2 is the first Midget that Tony Bettenhausen ever ran back in 1938. What is "different " about this one...

Re: My pics and stories, 1941-1972

Please, I will never correct anyone when it deals with race events that happened so many years ago but, in our records, it shows Merle Bettenhausen driving the Lockhart car this night.
This event...

Re: Were we a little crazy back then?

Yes you are correct, that is Shindler.

Here are somemore strange looking midgets.
Anyone remember the term we gave the car in the first photo?
We called them "turrent-top", as the canopy came...

Re: My pics and stories, 1941-1972

This is a main event shot at a 1969 USAC midget event at Davenport Iowa.
We are just out of this pic., behind the Lockart Chevy II.
These three drivers finished in this order.
Can anyone name the...
