Re: Colorado Springs Landmark

Now that's what I'm talkin bout! The old Rex. My high school buddies & I from Florence would rush in there as fast as we could drive from the pits at Sportsman's down Platte after the main just to...

Re: Colorado Springs International Speedway

I do remember hearing that in the wreck some part of a railing or barrier punched through the car & got him. Sure was sad news, whatever the cause. I seem to remember there was 2 years in a row when...

Re: Colorado Springs International Speedway

Fascinating background info! Used to really enjoy those invitationals. Remember the year Larry Detjens came out and snatched the race away from Mike Opperman when Mike suddenly got caught behind a...

Re: Colorado Springs International Speedway

Great pix 83x!
Especially the one with Heikes, Wilson, & Tom Reffner in the SuperAmerica AMC. Reffner ran off & hid from everyone that day if memory serves me.

Re: Colorado Springs Landmark

You mean to say that Giuseppe's is completely out of business in the Springs now? We used to stop at the downtown location for pizza & pitchers every race night. There's never been anything (IMHO)...

Re: What Does Your Avatar Mean!!

I don't have the funding to play with real race cars, so I have to settle for tinkering around with my old '50 Ford and "living fast" in my mind. That's why I love visiting this site!

Re: Belond Spl. at CDR

Thomas E- I remember the stock car race you speak of. I was there as a small kid. My dad, Bill Meigs, was involved as engine builder in a partnership between himself, Lou Wilschau and Vern Curtis....

Re: Old Pikes Peak Speedway

Then you remember Ronny being mad and kicking his car cause he wasn't fast enough to get around Pickard? As little kids, we tried to console him and make him feel better. Don't know if it worked, but...

Re: Sprint car paradise!

Hi Mike- The money issue has had a bad effect here at Perris as well. For the past couple seasons, we've been reduced from 2 USAC/CRA shows per month to only 1 now. I heard that the track has to pay...

Re: Sprint car paradise!

Yeah Mitch- Perris is my home track, so I was lucky enough to watch Damion win features like that for quite a few seasons before he moved on to Leffler. The track announcer, Scott Delosio, used to...

Re: Balboa Stadium - 1950s

Max- Great pix of Max Sr, and not bad on the avatar either! I'll bet some on the site will be able to identify with all those names on the Balboa Stadium Program lineup.

Re: Pikes Peak Speedway - "The Action Track"

Thanks again Bill. As a little kid I must have watched your dad and uncles race many a night at the old Pueblo Speedway when my cousins and I weren't running around and around under the grandstands!...

Re: Pikes Peak Speedway - "The Action Track"

Hey 83X- I have to chime in on this one! All wonderful shots! I used to hear some of the names as a little kid, and now I can match names with faces. As a matter of fact, the number 85 34 Ford sedan...

Re: Mike Wood & Ronny McDowell Pikes Peak

I'm kinda partial to the old shot of McDowell's rollover. Wondering if it was at PPS or Bunker Hill? Also, whether that car had the old flathead V8, or the Ford 6 that they ran for a time?

Re: Mike Wood & Ronny McDowell Pikes Peak

Such great old pix! I wasn't at Sportsman's when the Mod disaster happened, but I heard about it shortly after. I think Lou was on hand at the time. The guy's name was Jim O'Rourke.

Re: Mike Wood & Ronny McDowell Pikes Peak

I wasn't at Raceway Park when the flagman was killed, but I was at CSI the day the throttle stuck on a car that went into the pits and killed a crewman. What a sad sight that was. I also witnessed a...

Re: Mike Wood & Ronny McDowell Pikes Peak

The 50 car I remember was in the early 70's, since I was going only to Raceway Park in '67 & '68. I think it must have been the same car & owner, but with Del Moore driving?
