Post Compton "Comp" Wilson

Compton "Comp" Wilson (Berthoud, CO), a dairy farmer by trade, raced at Speedway Park in Fort Collins, CO; at Intermountain Speedway in Cheyenne, WY; and at Englewood Speedway in Englewood, CO.

The photo below shows Comp and his "chopped-fendered" Ford coupe in the pits at Speedway Park, circa 1949-1950. Several of the drivers carried that OK Rubber Welders logo on their racecars. For the price back in that era of racing, those OK re-cap racing slicks were very hard to beat.

Comp and Lou Wendzel co-owned some #84 Ford flat-head coupes during the mid-to-late 1950s. Working together, their team won many races and a track championship at Cheyenne's Intermountain Speedway. I'll send more of Lou's photos of their #84 Ford coupes via subsequent postings to ARM.

Later in his racing career, Comp campainged a #84 modified at Englewood Speedway. If anyone has information or photos of Comp's #84 modified, please send them to ARM.

Fast forward, oh say, about 30 years to the pits at Lakeside Speedway and in this Dave Burn Photograph we get the treat of seeing Comp Wilson’s Edmunds Chassis-Bodied (Super) Modified of the early Eighties.

By this time, Englewood Speedway had closed and the Englewood Racing Association (Super) Modifieds were running a limited schedule at Lakeside Speedway.

In later years, Mark Dreiling was behind the wheel of this same car. The car was white and numbered 5. The body was changed up and had more of a ‘boxy’ look to it, but was still a VERY Cool car. This was 1985-ish, and Mark competed with the Colorado Automobile Racing Club at Lakeside. By this time, the CARC had ‘opened up’ their rules considerably to allow these smaller ‘super’ coupes in the club.

In the background of this pits pic is the number 42 driven by Tony Spano.

I believe Comp Wilson continued to drive racecars up through part of the 1996 CARC season at Second Creek Raceway, where he experienced a wild crash on the front straight just coming out of turn four. He came out of the corner too high and slammed into the dirt and old tire ‘embankment’ that was a safety barrier to protect the drives from the butt of the concrete front chute wall and flag stand.
