Here’s a quick retrospective of some of Paul Garrison’s cars from the ‘60’s & ‘70’s.
(C.A.R.C. Archives) A young Paul Garrison (hand on hood) and crew pose next to his #100 Willys Modified coupe sometime in the early ‘60’s. This shot was taken in the old Lakeside Shopping Center parking lot just outside the long forgotten West entrance to Lakeside Amusement Park, where a small ticket booth can be seen in the background. –J.L. (C.A.R.C. Archives) Here’s a nice color shot of Paul Garrison’s #100 Willys in the parking lot of Lakeside Speedway with new paint and lettering job from sometime in the early/mid’60’s. Not sure if the name “Fuzz” that’s painted under the window refers to the driver or the car. –J.L. (Irwin Fogel collection) It’s rumored that Garrison once berated Sammy Sauer for driving the front fenders off of this Late Model back in the ‘60’s. Sauer supposedly snapped back with “Well, I’m used to driving open wheel cars!”. –J.L. (Photo by J. L. McGuire) I snapped this shot of Paul Garrison’s beautiful purple #59 Late Model during a red-flag break at Englewood Speedway in 1977. –J.L. |

Jerry, thanks for the Paul Garrison pictures. I first met Paul when he came out from Iowa (I think) and started pitting on Bud Potters cars. On Sat. afternoons we would tow up to Cheyenne, using Paul's Pontiac. The Interstate was pretty new and not much traffic. One night we raced Fritz in his pickup towing the #6 sedan half way to Cheyenne. Paul actually climbed in Bud's car one night in Cheyenne for his first ever race, a quite driver switch without anyone ever knowing.
Nice pitures of a rare car Jerry. Chuck |

I was always interested in that Willys Lakeside car because it was different. I seem to remember it having two different engines during it's four years at Lakeside, so checked my programs to see what and when; That first photo is from late 1963 when they switched from a '32 Ford to the Willys. Think it was painted gold. The engine was a '52 Willys flathead six. The '64 version of this car was painted a kind of tangerine/peach and not as good looking. However, my favorite version is that #100%, the one they ran during the '65 and '66 seasons. By then the CARC allowed them to be a little more competitive by using a '64 Willys OHC engine. A pretty creative effort by that team.

It would be nice to find some of these rare old CARC cars such as the Willys or Marv Slussers Hudson.

In 1967 Paul put the Willys up for sale. It was advertised in the Rocky Mountain News. I called on it and was told he wanted best offer for it. When I pressed he said he wanted at least $175.00. Can you believe that. I had a buddy that bugged me to buy it and I had the money, but at the time it wasn't in the cards. I don't know what became of it. Yeah, it would be cool to find it or the Hudson. A guy from Colorado Springs bought the Hudson from Rich Carpenter but I don't remember it making the track.
In I think '78 or '79 Paul bought Ed Brunner's Trans-Am late model. It was a Dennis Frings car that was absolutely beautiful Chris Ertler Last edited by lakeside #29; 01-02-2012 at 04:53 PM. |

Here are some shots from the Jim and Terrell Sherwood collection. Paul is just a boy in the 007 photo. What a great driver he became, not to mention his wonderful sense of humor and ability to do just about anything. I heard that Paul is going to be taking care of Colorado Nat'l Speedway this year (2012) and that is a cool deal for every one who has anything to do with that race track. No one knows that track like Paulie do!!!

I agree, great to see Paul back at CNS! Enjoyed racing with Paul in the #59 at CSIS when I was building cars for Mike Bonicelli.
