Default Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Speedway

Sadly gone now but beginning in the early 60’s the Friday night program moved from the clay 1/4 mi. Taft stadium which featured full fendered jalopies to the Fairgrounds Speedway 1/2 mi. under the MarCar banner. The biggest race of the year were the Wichita Nationals which pitted similar cars from all over Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and surrounding states.

Before long the fenders came off and the cars evolved into super modifieds and eventually sprint cars under the NCRA banner. During the early and mid 80’s the USAC dirt cars competed in a challenge race against the NCRA sprinters...a 3 year span.

My favorite years were the early to late 60’s as the cars evolved and each builder tried out his creation for the year. Sometimes more than one design over the season. V8 Chevys and a few Fords. Some of my favorites were Bob Eichor, Carl Ferguson, Evard Humphrey and later the great Harold Leep from Kansas.
