My favorite track growing up was the original Devil's Bowl in Dallas (not Mesquite) TX.
I grew up watching A.J. Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, Jim McElreath, Gordon Smiley, A.D. Trowell, Shady McWhorter, Billy Jack Casper, Jimmy Quick, Olin Gibbons, Bob Brooks, and others battle it out on the dirt. I remember seeing Pancho Carter there a couple of times. I don't have ANY pictures from that period, but lots of good memories. Anyone else ever visit the original Devil's Bowl? It was kinda down in a pit. |

I remember reading about the Original Devil's Bowl in one of dad's men's magazines back in the early fifties. Pretty much jalopy stock cars as I recall. Argosy, True, or one of those similar men's magazines. Like to find a copy if anyone remembers which one it was in. Thanks for reminding me, xo1tech.

I think you're right about the jalopies. My memories do not go back that far though. It was mid 60's before Mom and Dad would carry me with them.
Here is a terrible quality video that will give you a peek at what it was like back then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=Wr1KElntM2o Last edited by xo1tech; 06-13-2013 at 03:23 PM. Reason: Correction and Additional Info |

I doubt he ran those wide tires. That picture was just before they were getting ready to restore it.

xo1tech, thanks for that link. Fun to watch. Strange shape to the front stretch. The one story I remember from that old men's magazine was the race that was held for an injured driver, and he recovered enough to come back and win his own benefit race!
