A Colorado Springs man who was severely burned last month in a fire while working in his garage has died.

Herbert Shaver, 82, was working on March 31 on an engine in his detached garage in the 4100 block of Edwinstowe Avenue when the fire broke out. Fire investigators say fuel ignited. A neighbor said Shaver appeared to have been burned on his face and most of this body.

An 82-year-old man was hospitalized Tuesday after being severely burned in a fire in his garage in the 4100 block of Edwinstowe Avenue. Officials say he is in critical condition.

Firefighters said Herbert Shaver was working on an engine about 1:30 p.m. in his detached garage when the fire started.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Fire Department Lt. Kriss Soppe said that fuel was involved.

Soppe said Shaver ran into the house with his clothes on fire, and his wife helped put out the flames.

Neighbor Marshall Griffith said he was burned on most of his body.
"His face was burned pretty bad," Griffith said.

Griffith said that Shaver liked to restore antique cars in the garage.
