Default JOHN PIERCE Retrospective

One of the toughest to beat in a Stocker on the Englewood dirt during the 1950’s was John Pierce. With a style on the oval unmatched through the decade, John Pierce wheeled his way to capture the 1955, 1957, and 1958 track championships at Englewood Speedway with the Rocky Mountain Stock Car Racing Association.

After dominating the dirt through the ‘50’s, Pierce was still a force to be reckoned with on the Englewood asphalt throughout the ‘60’s.

Here’s a little retrospective of John Pierce in the asphalt years.

(J.L.M. collection) In the ‘60’s John Pierce drove the Don Maus #1E Modified to a lot of wins and quick times. John picks up another win here in 1964. Pete Brandenburg always lettered these cars in the ‘60’s, and they always featured Pete’s little cartoon “flame guy” hanging on for dear life by a string attached to the number one. The “flame guy” always had a little message on his t-shirt that changed from time to time. This one says “What’s Wrong?”.

(J.L.M. collection) John Pierce collects more hardware for 1967 in Don Maus’ dark metallic blue
Koch Auto Parts/Green Gables Enco #1E Modified at Englewood Speedway. It’s kind of hard to
see the message on the “flame guy’s” shirt, but he’s still hanging on, as he did throughout the ‘60’s.

This a photo of John Pierce from about the mid 50's, sorry for the poor quality. I got this from Bill Leigh who had worked and welded on John's cars from time to time. Bill (94) had auto mechanic shop at Morrison Road and South Sheridan, the famous "Hartz Corner" intersection.

"Stay tuned for the greatest spectacle in racing" ~ Sid Collins

LAKESIDE - Late at night by the old Lakeside Speedway, you can hear the ghosts - The barking, crackling "Flathead Fords", the zinging "Chevy Stove Bolt's", The rumbling of the "KK-Offy's", and the snarling "Ford V8-60's". Listen and faintly hear the announcer say, "Ladies and gentlemen, the line up for the trophy dash," and the place would erupt with the mix echoes of cheers and boo's...Remember...

I watched John Pierce in the 50s and 60s. Alltime favorite.

Courtesy of Eddie Biondi, here's a great old well worn photo of John Pierce at Englewood sometime in
the '50's when the track was dirt. That trophy on top of the car must have weighed a ton! In the
background if you look close, you can see a billboard for Bob Jones Skyland Ford, one of the prominent
car dealerships in Denver at the time.
