Default Larry McLaughlins #38 Modified

Here are two pictures from the Rick Losh collection.

The year is probably 1976, and Larry has commissioned me to letter his beautiful modified stock car which he intends on racing at Colorados Lakeside Speedway. The first picture shows a hippie leaning over......OH, Thats me, painting the Ams Oil logo on the hood. Legendary racer, Ray Flanagan was the dealer for the NEW synthetic blend oil.

Unfortunately, this car was totaled the same year when Larry took the wall in the south corner. I believe Mike Barney bought the remnants and still posesses the parts/pieces.

I believe that this car had been owned and driven by Larry Davis as the #41.

Hey Rick I may be mistaken but I think it was Steve (Awful) Knafelc that took the beautiful #38 into the south wall while hot lapping. I remember getting barneys car ready and hearing a engine running wide open as i turned around I saw the #38 smashing head on into the guardrail. Was told that the gas pedal stuck open causing the crash. If I'm wrong I'll blame it on old age and way to many beers.

I just got off the phone with Larry McLaughlin. Here is what he remembers.

Larry Davis owned the car as #41. Larry McLaughlin bought it, numbered it #38, and asked Steve Knafel to drive it for awhile. Steve drove it for 2 laps on a 'test and tune' day and wrecked it. Larry said, "That's it. You're out." Larry brought it back out a couple weeks later and drove it for 2 years.

Dick Decker bought the car from Larry McLaughlin. Dick and Mike Barney got together and the car was totaled, as stated above. Mike bought the body (remains) and Dick took the running gear and used it to build a Late Model.

Larry and Chris can't remember the number Dick Decker drove it as, but I'm sure one of you know. We are going to a brunch tomorrow at Larry and Alice McLaughlin's with Debbie and Greg. Thank you for letting me 'talk'. "Miss Peggy" Ertler.

You know, I think you are right. I had forgotten that Steve actually put his butt into the seat of a racer....you have not lost your memory, but you may have not drank enough beer....the smoker you are the drinker you get?????????/

Yup, You guys are right. Steve was part of my crew and my son -in -law at the time. And it was his second lap. When he came to he remembers "watching one of the coil overs roll down the track".

And thanks to Rick Losh for the art work. It's still one of the best looking cars. imho
