Default Do you know what that is?

Little fun here.
This photo is from a race we won back in 1953.
My question is, do any of you know wwhat that is that looks like dirt dust being kicked up?
I;ll give a hint.
The track was new then up in Wisconsin.
I can bet this is the only track made of this stuff.

An email from our esteemed member, Larry Dunham.

Hi Mitch

Did I know you when in 2009 I
wrote an article about going to Wisconsin Rapids with Loe Lucy and Bud Hoppe?
It was 1950 and the ttack was made out of sawdust from the lumber yards up
there. We had to come in and evertbody changed tires every 8 laps. Got a heck of a bite, but used up all our tires. Hoppe won it, I was 2nd Bud told me to put on Stagger blocks for the last 8 laps. The rest of them were running slicks. We had plenty of tread left but the others were out of bullets with there slicks. Stagger blocks were sometimes called Knobbies. I still have one mounted in storage in AZ. It must be 45 years old.

Later Larry

I do not think anyone will guess the surface, as it has never been duplicated again.
Walnut shells.
There was a nut company that made a mountain of walnut shells.
Somebody had a wild idea of making a small race track out of it, by adding a fine layer of dirt on top of the shells.
This event was in August of 1953.
That is us in 2nd, later to go on and win the event.
Not sure how well you can see it but Dad has all of his face and ears covered with clothing.
Dad is 92 (and still drives his car around better than most) and still remembers this day.
He said that is not dirt dust but dust from the walnut shells as the dirt was blown off by the second heat race.
He said the air was full of a smell like roasted peanuts all night long.

That's pretty interesting.

I'm glad it wasn't the Cod Fish or the cheese, could you imagine that smell on a long hot night??
