Default JOHN SHINE – Retrospective

John Shine
by Jerry Lee McGuire

Known for wearing wild sports shirts (before firesuits were mandatory), John Shine wheeled his trademark #71 Modified through the ‘60’s and ‘70’s at Englewood Speedway.
A constant front runner and tough competitor, John captured the 1967 Englewood Racing Association Modified Championship.

Here’s a quick retrospective of John’s career.

(J.L. McGuire collection) John Shine #71 darts to the bottom of the track and watches the carnage begin involving Spike Mock #29 (flipping), #60 Les Berry, #141 Mike Reynolds, and #171 Les Heinlen during 1964 Modified action. This photo shows how some of the guys were starting to cut down and narrow the full size coupe bodies on the E.R.A. Modifieds at the time for a sleeker, smaller look.

(J.L. McGuire collection) John Shine’s racing attire features a snazzy striped short sleeved button-up for this 1969 win.

(J.L. McGuire collection) Here’s John Shine’s hot pink and blue #71 Modified from the early ‘70’s. Looks like the days of wild racing attire had passed as John now sports the mandatory firesuit in this shot.

Mr. Shine passed away in May 1975

On an interesting note, a Denver rock n’ roll band known as the Damn Shambles recorded and released a local hit in 1995 titled “Johnny Shines”, about the rise and demise of the 1967 Englewood Speedway Modified champ John Shine.

Just so happens I have a ERA (Englewood Racing Assoc.) program from 1970, and John Shine is one of the featured drivers.

Here's the cover.

Here's the feature photo. Note Jim Opperman's #10, behind Shines car.

And the bio.
