Here is possibly the greatest dirt track driver of all time, when he wanted to be, Eugene "Jud" Larson in Ashley Wrights wonderful Kurtis Kraft Offy midget. This is the "Hut Hundred", Terre Haute IN. October 6, 1957.

![]() Multiple RMMRA champions battle it out at Lakeside Speedway in the mid 1970's #95 is Steve Troxell 1966, and 1973 RMMRA champ, #1 is Dave Strickland Sr., 1974,75,76 champ both in Roger Mauro Edmunds VW's. Eddie Jackson won RMMRA titles in 1960,62,63,67,68 and 1970, he is outside Strickland, in his own Edmunds VW. Sammy Sauer is on the outside in Harry Conklins Edmunds VW#99, he was RMMRA champ in 1971 and 72. Jim Beckley is in Don Schwietzers VW #3, he was RMMRA champ in 1991. If you tried to add up these guys feature wins, it would take days, as they all won multiple features, and championships, in other divisions. Last edited by Mitch G.; 04-16-2009 at 04:41 PM. |

Check out "Lone Star JR", Johnny Rutherford, 3 time Indy 500 winner, and 1965 USAC National Sprint car champ. Here he is in a Edmunds VW midget, in the mid 1970's, ready for action in Australia!

What more can you say about this cat! A.J. Foyt, also in a mid 1970's midget race in Australia, another beautiful Edmunds VW midget.

Foyt in Jack Londons Kurtis Offy, this is Ascot, CA early 1960's. Foyt won the "Turkey Nite Grand Prix" (100 lap midget race), at Ascot in 1960 and 61 in this car.

The "Hut 100" for midgets on the 1/2 mile dirt at Terre Haute, IN. is a midget classic. In 1961 it rained hard, the track is a mess, mud a foot deep, and the drivers and crews want to go home. Foyt asks, "Are we here to b***h, or race?, so he goes out and tries to qualify for one of the 33 starting spots. He's not close as he is first to go out. As others qualify, the track becomes somewhat race worthy. All 33 midgets are set for the 100 laps, but Foyt is not in the field, he and his buddies go ride shopping, Don Northan in Hank Green's Kurtis Offy is in at 33rd. Foyt and his pals buy the ride, Foyt starts last. Bear in mind, he's already won the Indy 500 (1960's USAC eastern sprint car champ), and the World Series, and the Stanley Cup, so now he's mad. Foyt goes to 10th in 10 laps, 6th in 15, he laps 5th place twice and is leading by miles. USAC says fading light, and track conditions are too poor, and they call it at 75 laps. Foyt has won it by huge margin. The best drivers of the era were their that day, if this does not put A.J. Foyt at the top of your all time list, you are living in a fantasy world.

Two of my legendary favorites...
Sam Hanks and Mel Kenyon. I saw Sam Hanks race in So Cal in the late 40' and early 50's. I always thought Mel Kenyon was a good driver. ![]() "Stay tuned for the greatest spectacle in racing" ~ Sid Collins LAKESIDE - Late at night by the old Lakeside Speedway, you can hear the ghosts - The barking, crackling "Flathead Fords", the zinging "Chevy Stove Bolt's", The rumbling of the "KK-Offy's", and the snarling "Ford V8-60's". Listen and faintly hear the announcer say, "Ladies and gentlemen, the line up for the trophy dash," and the place would erupt with the mix echoes of cheers and boo's...Remember... ![]() |
