Default C. N. S. - Figure 8's 1989-1994

When Englewood Speedway ceased to exist in 1979, so did Figure Eight racing in the Rocky Mountain region for the next ten years, until Colorado National Speedway put an X in their newly paved facility in 1989.

The sport was back with a new generation of drivers and fans, plus some of Englewood's top veterans returning to thrill the crowds and fill the stands. But, where it was the beginning of one era, it was also the end of another.

The period between '89 and '94 was the last time all the cars were actually stock cars and not pre-fab. And it was a time where it was nothing to have up to 40 cars run a night with time trials, a trophy dash, some heat races, and an A and B main.

Although the cars still run in an 8 today, the sport has certainly changed with the times. This thread is a look at the first 5 years of the rebirth of Figure Eight racing at C. N. S.

(Joe Starr photo) After finally hanging up the '57 Plymouth fins in 1976, Figure 8
legend and champion Lee Stogsdill made a comeback in 1993 in this '77 Plymouth.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Harry 'The Showman' Livermore makes repairs on one of
his famous pink #17's in 1990.

(Joe Starr photo) John Hafemeister did plenty of laps at both Englewood and
C.N.S.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Penalty for running the X.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Penalty for stopping at the X.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Ronnie Hults, Jr. had humble beginnings in early '90's Figure 8's.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Some of the cars from the old Bomber division the year before ran
the 8 in the first year of the Figure 8's at C.N.S. in 1989.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Englewood vet Dennis Stepanich returned in 1989 to continue
his long career.

(J.L. McGuire collection) Here's a page from a 1990 C.N.S. program I had autographed by
Dave Tansey (first CNS F8 champ), Lucky Beickman, Terry Martinez, Mike Pratt, Mike Craig,
Dennis Stepanich, Jim Egli, John Hafemeister, Darryl Creekmore, Dave Roe, Roger Reynolds,
Rick Sheil, and a nice note from Harry Livermore.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Three 7 cars in a Roe, as in Roe family racing.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Anyone remember who drove the #00?

(J.L. McGuire photo) 1991 champ Mike Pratt (black) makes adjustments while Darrell Smith
(white) barks out orders to his Badwrench crew.

(Joe Starr photo) Dennis Stepanich got rubber-side-up in 1990.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Craig Moore thrilled the crowds and like his Uncle Kent did at
Englewood, always had a beautifully painted and lettered car, with help from his brother
Dale Moore. The Moores still crank out some great looking jobs on other cars.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Englewood veteran Jim Bedore in 1991.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Anyone remember this #44?

(J.L. McGuire photo) This is a very odd shot of future Figure Eight champion
Darryl Creekmore and his '72 Duster in 1990.

Here's a picture of Roger "the X" Reynold's post Englewood/Lakeside car---first figure 8 race at the newly paved Colorado National Speedway with a new f-8-1989--I know Roger ran this Nova at least a year or 2 at beginning--don't know what happened to it after that---I have other pics from this race, so I hope to post more---kt

Also from 1989/90--a pic of Tommy "the Kid" Smith's f-8er---this was the Buick version of the Nova--we originally had a v-6 in it--later, small block chevy--I lettered this car in my tool/H-D filled 1 car garage---first 1 side--then move it to the other wall. paint the other side----with the V-6---car would get smoked on the straights, but caught up in the corners---never lifted---kt---ps---I think we used the last of 20+ gals of Plum Crazy Purple we picked up in 81 when we bought the Petty car--this is also the last THPracing car that was built by any members of the original crew from 1976--kt

I think the #00 was driven by a cat named Alan Dagel that hung with the Voorhis crowd. The #44 was Joel Ulanders first ride I believe.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Englewood vet Terry Martinez went from track to tow truck to trailer
here in 1992.

(Photo by Sharon Yates) Terry's brother Anthony Martinez wheeled this Badwrench #14 in 1992.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Future champion Tommy Roe's Eighter was shortened
a foot or two this night.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Check out Big Al Duran early on in his long career!

(J.L. McGuire photo) Dick Gastineau's night ended this way.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Mike Craig was another Englewood vet who did good at C.N.S.

(J.L. McGuire photo) John Hafemeister and crew talk it over in 1990.

(Photo by Sharon Yates) 1990 champ Rick Sheil (red) in 1992.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Looks like 1993 champion Lee Needham didn't fare well this night.

As kind of a footnote to this story, the Figure 8 division at C.N.S. once banded together to form the Colorado Renegade Figure 8 Racing Association in '97. In an attempt to give the guys more say about their division, the club fizzled out once the season was over.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Looks like 'The Assassin' Craig Moore was the big winner this night
for the C.R.F.R.A. in a Joe Starr sponsored car.

(J.L. McGuire photo) It was shades of the old Englewood days when Jim Bedore
ran this good looking Eighter at C.N.S. in 1990.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Harvey Webb in 1989.

(J.L. McGuire photo) Englewood legend Jack Voorhis had two sons (John #32 & Chris #35)
who did well at Colorado National in the early '90's.
