Default Dave LaGuardia #5 & #55 Late Model - Super Mods

From the Rick Wasilko collection, here are some photos of Dave LaGuardia and crew members/family members shot at both Colorados Englewood Speedway and Colorado Nat'l Speedway. I cannot recall what years Dave drove, but I will guess it was between the mid 70's into the mid to late 80's. I think that his father, the late Mike LaGuardia, bank rolled these cars. Mike owned a bar first located at 72nd and Federal and later at 72nd and Lowell. Both were called the Italian Stallion. Mike fielded some terrific looking cars, both late models and super- modifieds for Dave's driving pleasure. They sported some pretty impressive sponsors as well, such as Jolly Rancher Candies. Stan Swank (Stan's Sign Co.) was the sign painter responsible for many of these great lettering/pinstriping jobs. I am not too familiar with Dave's crew members, although in some shots it appears that Kevin Gallo and some of the other Gallo family members are present.

Again, thanks S.S. for sharing these great pics from R.W.'s collection. I totally remember the Jolly Rancher #55 Late Model (first post, second photo) that he ran out at Englewood in the '70's. And of course, his ERA Modifieds.

And what a small world it is! A Top 40 rock band I was in used to play at the Italian Stallion on 72nd & Lowell back in 1984. Sometime during the late '80's/early '90's I was in a classic rock band that played a lot of gigs at the bar on 72nd & Federal. At that time it was just called "LaGuardia's". I never knew of the racing connection there until I read your post just now. Cool!

HEY JERRY...I was the drunk over at the dart board (or one of them) that used to whistle a dart past you guys every now and then....HEHE. You guys picked up the tempo...I think!! Or maybe that was me being escorted from the bar by the bouncer....either way It were fun.

Haaa! I betting that you were BOTH Rick! Seems I remember the bass player being a bit leary of the dart throwers because it was on his end of the stage. Also, I seem to remember a huge air conditioning unit at the 72nd & Federal bar that hung down from the celing over the stage right about where I had to set up my drums. Cracked my head on that many a time and then the tempo would usually slow!! Rowdy, but fun place as I remember, I think, my head still hurts.......

Jerry, me and Darryl Stingerie used to go in there and close the place down. Darryl had this drop-dead gorgeous blond girl friend that he used to dance with at LaGuardias joint...probably to your tunes. The best thing about that place was they had frozen pizza on hand at the end of the night and some sort of instant blast furnace that cooked them in minutes....it was the best thing that ever happened to a drunk!! I bet I supplied Dave with new tires every week...with the money I spent in there.

Dave was a good shoe, he won races on dirt and pavement, open wheel, and stock cars. In the early 80's he was driving Kenny Heffner's Cain built midget with VW power, #61. He struggled a bit in the midgets, but what I remember the most was as soon as he got out of the race car, and took his helmet off, he ran over to the nearest side view mirror on any car, and combed and checked out his hair!!!!

Dave in my uncle and I am the little guy in the first set of pictures. He finished up with racing about 1995 and was driving a 360 sprint car for Mac McCormick (SpitFire), very competitive and winning races. Previous to that he drove a 410 sprint car for Paul Nolte (Gramps). After retiring from the driverís seat, my uncle helped me on my IMCA modified and enjoyed riding his Harley.
