More Englewood memories.....
(Unique Photo) This is a shot of Englewood's new Sportsman division in 1977. Convertables were allowed in this class as you can see. That's Pete Brandenburg in his yellow #15 roaring by the mess. (Photo by Bruce Thompson) Cool shot of the Englewood pits as Rick Montgomery awaits his turn to tech on this hot afternoon in 1974. (Irwin Fogel collection) September 1967 article from Speed Wheels. More Englewood memories.....
(J.L. McGuire collection) In 1972 Englewood Speedway ran three nights a week with their regular weekend race meets on Saturday and Sunday, then every Wednesday night as well. The Wednesday night meets featured Mini Stocks, Chargers (a real low budget Super Stock kind of class) and Formula Fords. Ahh, those were the days. 3 big nights of "The Wildest Show on Wheels"!!! (J.L. McGuire collection) Nick Weber #88 in a '57 Volvo battles Don Hagen #19 in a '70 Datsun during Wednesday night Mini Stock action. (J.L. McGuire collection) Formula Fords were fun to watch zip around the oval on "hump day". (Darrell Smith collection) Quite a few cars showed up every Wednesday for the affordable Charger class at Englewood. Here, Darrell Smith #2 puts it to another Charger during a main event. Heh-heh! Bill, Herk Snerd is actually "Herb" Snerd according to an old program. It always seemed that the newspapers (and sometimes the track programs) used to slaughter some of the drivers names at times. I don't know if the weekly race results were phoned in or what, but most the time there was some sort of typo.
Yeah, ol' Herk Snerd joins the ranks of Wayne Smallsworth, Joe Layman, Jim Hopperman, Lee Sticksdale, Bill Starts, Sam Sower, Rich Codger, Junior Reeler, Roger Avance, and many other mangled names over the years. ![]() |

In 1951 Sam Gallo won the Englewood Speedway championship and during this time, free bus service was provided from downtown Englewood to the Track.

Here's a few more rare shots of Englewood I ran across.....
(J.L. McGuire collection) This angle of the speedway from the air is different than the one used for the 1975 programs. West Oxford Ave. can be seen in the top left of the photo. (Candy Codner photo) Fans arrive at the front gate as Sandy Boyer takes their tickets in 1975. That's me standing by the pole at the top right selling programs. (Mel Keller photo) The pits at Englewood are packed in this 1970 photo. |
