It was not until 1975 and 1976 that Darrell won his first two track championships at Intermountain Speedway in his 'wicked fast' #66 KRAE Vega Wagon. Prior to 1975 in his #66 '55-Chevys, Darrell had many runner-up track championships during those years. Joe Waelen was an 'extraordinarily gifted wrench' who was also responsible for ensuring that Kenny Clark and his #13 '55-Chevy won consecutive track championships during the late '60s and early '70s at Intermountain Speedway. I would often stop by Darrell's garage near my parents house in south Cheyenne to visit with Darrell, Joe, and the #66 crew. R.I.P. Darrell...my ol' friend. ~Buzz Wendzel |
