Default You've got a Central IL newbie here ....

Hey folks, bumped into this place by accident, but absolutely loved it and would like to stay around a while.

I'm Tom Harrison, and live about 35 miles from Springfield, Illinois. Have been a racing fan for several years, Hot Rod & NSSN subscriptions starting about 1968, most still in my basement.

Made a few trips to the Springfield Mile, almost regular for a couple of years at Joe Shaheen's Springfield Speedway, along with Jacksonville & Quincy.

Have been fortunate that I have seen some of the VERY best ... A.J. Foyt, Jan Opperman, Bubby Jones, Kinser, Swindell .... even got to meet Greg Weld & Ward Dunseth at a reception with the restored sprinter.

Last year I made it out to York Springs, PA for the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. LOVED IT !

So if you don't mind, I'd sure like to lurk here for a while. THANKS in advance !

I had the great opportunity to view the Ward Dunseth's family album of the sprint car in your picture. What an awesome opportunity to see his cars back in the day. I may live in the same town as you about 35 miles from Springfield.

Hello I used to live in Jacksonville, IL. I grew up watching the races at Jacksonville speedway and watching people like Jim Patrick, Terry Renfro, Dick Trout,The Lindsay brothers Ken and Dean.and a few others I know I'm forgetting.

The Jacksonville track is really struggling to find a promoter this year. They built a track near New Berlin a couple years ago...Heard he may or may not race every week this year too. I hate to see these dirt tracks not race. I know it is expensive to race and to promote...shame the economy is forcing them out.
Hotwheels1570...I tried running a micro sprint at Jacksonville back in the early '90's..found out real fast I didn't have the cash. So I reverted to collecting memorabilia from this area...Still have my old car and been collecting programs and other stuff. I hope to talk more to you guys from around here.

Well I'm in Las Vegas now been out here 4 yrs now. I tried my hand at pony stocks a few yrs back at the raceway it was fun and cheap but to many of them was acting like they was starting their NASCAR careers and sucked all the fun out of it. Plus i was one of the few who was running a truck and the next season they wouldn't let us run trucks so I just didn't do it anymore. Still do the occasional demo derby though LOL.

I was stationed in Rantoul for four years in the early seventies. Went down to Springfield to watch the champ cars at the fairgrounds. As hop laps started, I see A. J. flying into the first turn, with one hand on the wheel, and the other resting on the cockpit sill, like he was on a sunday drive. Then came Bobby Unser, followed by Mario, and then Al. I wish there was racing like that now.

Thanks, Dave Russell
