Default 1946-48 Lakeside Speedway Midget Photos

Here, from the Pat Lucy-Bob Buck collection, are some interesting, mostly autographed photos of cars and drivers that competed at Denver's Lakeside Speedway during the 1946-48 seasons. Pat Lucy kept track of these drivers, many whom met their fate doing what they loved. Of all the photos that I have viewed and loaded on this site, these are particularly haunting to me. Would you agree?

Rick, this is a treasure trove of Denver auto racing history, nice post, great photo's. Your very first picture, car #1 is Buddy Martinson, the car is very famous, it's the pre war Kurtis rail frame that was built for Rex Mays. Martinson bought it in 1941 for the Lakeside season, then in November took it back to LA for the "Thanksgiving Night Grand Prix" midget race at Gilmore Stadium, put Roy Russing in it, and won. That car stayed, and raced in Denver up into the 1960's, Frank Mantello won main events in that car in the early 1960's. Martinson died of some illness, as a kid I remember my dad saying he thought it was brain cancer. The #62 is of course the Kenz & Leslie Kurtis Kraft Offy that Johnny Tolan won the 1947 RMMRA title in, with Continental Airlines sponsorship. Joe Giba bought that car and raced it in Colorado, and all over the country till the early 1960's when he sold it. Ended up in California where it was racing into the 1980's!! Max Sweeney was injured at Ascot in that car, he never recovered, and died a year or so later, I think it was 1981 or 82. The car is still in California, Ross Leslie found another Kurtis Offy and restored it as the 1947 car. Tolan left Denver for the national scene, and won the AAA national midget midget title in 1952, he ran in a few Indy 500's, his best finish was
13th in 1958 last car on lead lap, in the Greenman & Cassale entry. Our esteemed member Larry Dunham was good buddies with Tolan, they hung out and raced midgets together for years in the 1950's.

This is indeed a great post, one of the best so far for midget history in Denver. Wondered if the name Al Davis showed up in that bunch somewhere. He was a local miget owner from tht era. I worked with his wife back in the sixties. One day she brought a bunch of photos from those days showing his cars and others. Wish I'd had the forthought to copy them.

Well, it wasn't "Pop", he went by Pappy Hedricks. And Ray was known as Flippet Tippett. Both were good friends of my dad.

Thanks, Dave Russell

I do not know what they went by. I write what was on the pictures or around the pictures in the photo album. I think Miss Lucy was a young girl when this photo album was collected in the 40's. She probably got "Pop" confused with "Pappy".....but thanks for setting the record straight.

Sometimes the eyes are not seeing what they see, with said I may be guessing as to who (I think) some of the Lakeside Speedway drivers are ...
Front Row ...
4th from left Joe Giba
7th from left Roy Leslie
Back Row ...
Far right Foster "Foss" Campbell
7th from the right Lloyd Axel
8th from the right Earl Kouba

"Stay tuned for the greatest spectacle in racing" ~ Sid Collins

LAKESIDE - Late at night by the old Lakeside Speedway, you can hear the ghosts - The barking, crackling "Flathead Fords", the zinging "Chevy Stove Bolt's", The rumbling of the "KK-Offy's", and the snarling "Ford V8-60's". Listen and faintly hear the announcer say, "Ladies and gentlemen, the line up for the trophy dash," and the place would erupt with the mix echoes of cheers and boo's...Remember...

Wow It sure is great seeing my sister Marlene Kohler in her parachute cord skirt giving Burton his winnings.
Had go dig out my Mothers scrapbook of the "46" season.
